7/7/2023 0 Comments Psychonauts gameplay![]() It stays true to its theme from the original game and presents an art style that is unique. Psychonauts 2 isn’t supposed to be a next-gen experience and the game doesn’t even try to be. It works similar to the ricochet gun on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, albeit a bit more rudimentary. My favourite upgrade was making the Psi Blast bounce between enemies. There’s also a slight RPG mechanic introduced in this game where you can make your powers stronger by redeeming collectables such as figments and emotional baggage. Psychonauts 2 doesn’t reinvent the platforming wheel, but it does add new layers that make the game highly enjoyable. These powers are essential to use for traversing the world, combating enemies and dodging incoming attacks. In terms of gameplay, Psychonauts brings back the staples such as Psi Blast, Telekinesis and Levitation but also adds new powers to Raz’s arsenal. To tackle this boss, you need to slow down time and take a ‘breather’, just like you would in real life when you’re getting a panic attack. The same goes for bosses as well, my favourite being ‘Panic Attack’. When I say enemies match each mental world, I mean many of those enemies represent different types of mental health problems. ![]() These different enemies are also weak to your different abilities which makes the gameplay interesting. You will have to use all your abilities to look for these collectables as some are quite well hidden.ĭouble Fine also does a great job at introducing different types of enemies that match each mental world. You need to collect emotional baggage, memory figments that are represented as neon lights and memory vaults to know more about the lore. However, in Psychonauts 2, each mental world has a different objective and also a myriad of different collectables. Most platformers tend to make players do the same thing in every level which quickly gets boring and archaic. It did feel jarring at first, however, once you start getting engrossed with the story, everything starts to make sense.ĭouble Fine have managed to craft unique worlds that keep level progression interesting, however the developers went a step further. For me, that was a direct representation of complicated minds that needed mending. By now you may have guessed that each world is either trippy or wacky. Similarly, other worlds explore themes such as a casino or a cooking show hosted by puppets. Each mental world has a theme related to things that each of the six founding members dislike or fear.įor example, the first world has a dental theme, signifying Dr Loboto’s hatred for the tooth doctor. Since the game deals with a lot of internal conflicts, anxiety, and other forms of mental health, each mental world is drastically different from the other. Raz must invade each of their minds with their permission to help them overcome their fears and mental problems. However, each of the six founding members has suffered greatly from the devastating battle with Maligula from the previous game. The initial story involves Raz finding a mole in the Psychonauts organisation and reuniting the founding members of the organisation to keep evil at bay. Once you are introduced to the world of Psychonauts 2 and the narrative, you’re introduced to new and returning characters to get the story going. You play as Raz, who is an intern at the Psychonauts, a secret organisation that works to keep peace around the world by investigating paranormal entities and psychics. The opening missions teach you everything you need to know about the world, the mechanics and powers that will come in handy in the rest of the game. You don’t need to worry though as Double Fine have put together a spectacular recap of the original game right before you start Psychonauts 2. If you’ve never played the original game, you might be confused as to what is happening in the story. The team is now trying to find out who Dr Loboto was working for and why he is protective of this villain’s identity. The game picks up right where Rhombus of Ruin had left off where you and your team capture Dr Loboto during a mind heist. After playing the very first level, my concerns were put to rest because it felt as if the gap of 16 years never happened. When a new Psychonauts was announced six years ago, I was sceptical about the game simply because I was worried whether it would retain its original charm. It has been 16 years since we played the main Psychonauts game which in itself feels like an eternity.
